Chantel and Chad Hoerr, the owners of CC’s Vapor Paradise in Canton, say the biggest change seen in the vaping business is the appearance of new products, namely variable voltage box mods. The mods contain more power than traditional e-cigarettes and vape pens and allow users to adjust the strength of the hit.
“Technology moves fast,” added Patrick O’Brian, owner of Stay and Puff Vapor Lounge in Farmington. “Most of the devices I started out with are now almost obsolete.”
For both businesses, the majority of their customers are cigarette smokers trying to kick the habit.
According to Chantel Hoerr, those trying to quit smoking start out with e-liquids that contain the same level of nicotine as their preferred brand of cigarettes. The customers are then slowly adjusted to lower and lower levels of nicotine until they are nicotine-free.
The hands-to-mouth motion also appears to help people satisfy their cravings, she added.”People feel better,” Chantel Hoerr said. “They can taste better. They can breathe better.”For Debbie Watson of Canton, vaping was the only way she could quit smoking.
“Over the years, I’ve spent tons of money on prescription drugs and patches and (tried going) cold turkey and nothing helped,” Watson said.
Watson smoked cigarettes for 40 years, and her husband Terry smoked for 45 years, when she began vaping in February.Terry Watson was able to quickly quit his habit and vaping as well, but Debbie Watson said she started vaping with too low of a nicotine dosage so she began both smoking and vaping at the time.
Once she began a higher nicotine dosage, Debbie Watson was able to stop smoking cigarettes by the end of that same week.”I feel better,” Debbie Watson expressed. “I breathe better. Food tastes different.”
She added that while she still misses cigarettes, vaping gives her the feeling of smoking which helps satisfies her urge.”When I think about the price of cigarettes now compared to when I started smoking, it’s ridiculous,” Debbie Watson said, noting that she believes vaping equipment to be worth the purchase price.
Lucas King, also of Canton, kicked his smoking habit at the end of September after having smoked for 24 years.King first tried using a vape pen but was unsuccessful until he purchased a box mod. The more he vaped, King noted, the less he wanted cigarettes because he could no longer stand the taste.
King’s girlfriend, Erika Davis, says she has noticed a major improvement since he began vaping.
